J. Michael "Mike" McCabe

August 19, 1948 ~ January 25, 2018 (age 69) 69 Years Old
J. Michael “Mike” McCabe
August 19, 1948 - January 25, 2018

Mike McCabe was a son, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin, nephew and friend to many.  Mike and Bette were married in August 1970 and had three boys, John, Jim and Jeff.  He was a very proud grandfather to Mellie and Max, Jacob and Jack and Payton and Jonah.  Grampa Mike or Papa always looked forward to wrestling, hassling, scuffling or just playing with his grandkids.  Mike grew up and lived in the Chicago area until 1992, when Mike and family came to Florida to try their hand in the pizza business, opening J. Michael’s Pizza on the Cape in 1993.
Mike was an employee of the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad for 25+ years where he provided for his family and made many friends and memories that lasted his lifetime.  Mike was known for his razor-sharp wit, his sense of humor and for being an all-around good guy.  He possessed a mastery of the English language that would shame a sailor, invented and butchered words and had the world’s worst poker face.  You always knew where you stood with Mike whether you wanted to or not.  He was most comfortable with an adult beverage, good conversation and an audience.  Anyone who spent time with “Big Mike”, as he was known to his close friends, has a Big Mike story to tell.  All of these stories would leave you in a fit of laughter.  He was a life-long sports fan, particularly the Cubs and Bears.  Mike never thought he’d live to see the day the Cubs would win the World Series, but he did.  He loved coaching youth baseball and managed many championship level teams while his boys moved through the youth baseball program.  Mike liked to fish and would wet a line just about anywhere he thought he might catch something.
Mike was very proud of his service to our Country, and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service in the Vietnam War.  Later in his life he became active with V.F.W. Post 8463 and the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.
