Tribute

James Gavin Gunter

James Gavin Gunter of Matlacha passed away on December 21, 2020 at the age of 58.
Jim was born on November 21, 1962 in Terrell, Texas to Joe Lou and Mary Nell Gunter. He moved to Matlacha with his family in 1969.
He graduated from Bishop Verot High School in 1981 and was a member of the Varsity Football team.
After graduation, Jim entered the Florida State Fire College and upon completion joined the Cape Coral Fire Department where he served for 30 years until his retirement in 2017. In 2002, he was named Firefighter of the Year.
Jim lived for the outdoors and when he wasn’t working could be found on one of his many fishing boats trolling around the waters of Matlacha, competing in tournaments on Lake Okeechobee or paddle boarding/kayaking in the back waters near his home. He, along with his family, was also a member of the Cape Coral Rowing Club for many years.
One of Jim’s greatest pleasures was visiting foreign countries with his family to hike and explore. He was an avid reader, loved music and playing practical jokes and he had the ability to fix just about anything. Jim was comfortable in any setting whether it was a black-tie fundraiser or a Broadway play or just talking to locals at the nearby pub.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jane Gunter, his children Cameron and Kelly Gunter, parents Lou and Mary Nell Gunter, his brother Jason (Loree) Gunter, all of Southwest Florida; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, his family at the Cape Coral Fire Department and very dear life-long friends from across the country.
Jim’s quick-witted humor, infectious laugh, smile and kindness to all will be greatly missed and he will continue to be loved by his many friends and family.

A private family service will be held with a public celebration of life at a later date.
