Martha Ann Lieb-Cox

1932 ~ 2018 (age 86)
Martha Ann Lieb Cox passed away peacefully in her home in Cape Coral on December 4, 2018. She was born November 29, 1932 in LaGrange, Indiana, the daughter of Wava Diehl and Dr. Jean Paul Lieb. Martha graduated from Kendallville High School and attended Indiana University as a music education major. She graduated from Indiana University in 1954 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree, having studied trumpet, piano, and voice. Martha married fellow IU graduate Dr. Edward Franklin Cox, who was a professor of history and a published author. Martha taught piano lessons for over thirty years, mentoring many students. She provided support and encouragement for her six children to study music; all six children majored in music on the college level and played professionally.
In 1976, the Cox family was named Musical Family of the Year by the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs. Martha started her career in the public schools by teaching strings in the Oakwood Public Schools and then was hired full-time in the Kettering City Schools, where she taught on the high school, middle school, and elementary school levels. While working full-time, she earned her master’s degree in education from Wright State University. In 1996, Martha and her daughter Rachel published a book of historical plays for children, which were produced in the Kettering schools. After retiring from the Kettering City Schools in 1999,
Martha moved to Cape Coral, where she became involved in the music community of Southwest Florida. She substituted in the Lee County Schools, taught band at the Port Charlotte Seventh-Day Adventist School, taught private music lessons, sang in the Thomas A. Edison Congregational Church choir, performed in the Lee County Community Band, and was active with Calusa Musicale. In 2002, Martha and her daughter Rachel started a music scholarship at Florida Gulf Coast University. Martha is predeceased by her husband Dr. Edward Franklin Cox, and her three siblings: Dr. Richard Lieb, Margaret Tuck, and David Lieb. She is survived by her six children: Elizabeth, Jeanne, Ruth, Franklin, Judith, and Rachel. Services will be held at the Thomas A. Edison Congregational Church.
