On this Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2017, I post this tribute… so thankful for YOU, Viola, my dear BFF, I miss you so... Heaven has been blessed with a shining new Angel.

You were a positive energy in my life. From the moment in 2004, when my moving van pulled up and you came out to the street to welcome me to the neighborhood. You had tremendous energy for a woman of 84. Still golfing and shopping and eating out with family and friends. You were always happy and smiling and thankful and calm. You were my calm.

I will miss coming over to spend time with you, I will miss our conversations, there wasn’t a subject we didn’t touch, I will miss your advice, I will miss caring for you, making homemade meals that you loved so much, teaching you how to use the iPad and FB so you could keep in touch with family and friends and keep up with new technology – you were a quick study! I will miss shopping for your favorite clothing designer, Alfred Dunner, I will miss watching Downton Abbey, Poldark, Victoria, Antiques Roadshow and Outlander with you, I will miss sharing our love for animals, the wild birds that came to visit... our resident Great Blue Heron, the Anhinga with wings spread wide, the resident Osprey high atop the tree, the Pelicans that came inland at winter, the coupled Otters, the Squirrels scampering with the nuts you gave them, Harriet, the Eagle on cam-watch and the flocks of White Ibis. A large flock of White Ibis flew in to visit you in your last hour, to dance on your lawn, as you were blessed with wings of your own. I will miss the stories of Digger and the puppies for the blind, and your love of cats. I was with you when you adopted Juliette and when her health failed, I found Sparkle for you to love, it was a great honor. She enlightened your life. It made me happy to take away your tears. Nothing beats a warm fuzzy cat to have by your side. I will miss the feel of your soft hand in mine when we took walks and you felt unsteady, I will miss your voice when you’d sing-song “youuu whooo” or your sing-song call for “Sparkle” and even your polite thank you’s... until the very end... and your sweet saying “you’re welcome I’m sure.”

We respected one another. We trusted one another. But you trusted me in the most honorary way one can... with your health and well being. I did the very best I could. I know you knew that, and I know how much you appreciated it too.

You were loving and generous of heart and soul. It was my hearts mission to keep you happy and healthy for a long as I could. From something as simple as a new blouse or a fresh éclair from the bakery or a tiny red Rose from your ever blooming rose bush, placed in a vase so you could enjoy it from your favorite chair – to needed doctor visits – to keeping the Holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter as festive as they could be. The same for your Birthday... You were so proud to have reached the age you did... 96+. That is an amazing age to become and when you knew the end was near... You had no fear. You told me and others you were ready. You told me and others you believed strongly, those in your life... we will meet again. I sure do hope so, for that means your spirit is dancing now with those whom have gone before you, and that someday we too, will meet again.

You gave my life purpose, you brought out my caring, nourishing and compassionate self. You were my rock when I needed guidance, you were my mentor in navigating life. You listened and advised me when I had a kink in my marriage, my business, my family... your wisdom and your intellect was so appreciated. You understood me. You laughed at my silly humor. You helped me to understand through many stories, how difficult it is to grow old. The stories you shared with me of your lifetime were always interesting. I know sometimes you were heartbroken. I dried your tears, I listened, I kissed your cheek, I gave you hugs and I let you know you were loved... and you were! We were meant to cross paths on this Earth. We always marveled at that. You were so thankful for me... and I was so thankful for you. What better experience can two people hope to have during our time on Earth.

All who knew you were blessed to have been part of your life. You were never one to raise your voice or speak negatively about anybody. Viola, you always welcomed me with a ready smile and treated me like part of the family. You warmed my heart and made me feel extra special, and I did my best to return such warm-hearted kindness.

Viola, you will be remembered by those who knew and loved you for your love of family and friends, your compassion for others, your independent nature, and your generosity of heart that rivaled no one. I am grateful for the time we spent together, and the laughter we shared, and look forward till the day we meet again. What you leave behind is what you have woven into the lives of others.

I have now lost a friend, but my friend is now happy and at peace in Heaven. My love & prayers go with you. God Bless this gentle woman and her gentle soul. Viola, you are missed. So, for now I say: "See you later Alligator!" and I can hear your whispered reply from the Heavens..."In a while Crocodile!"
