The passion for life Jim embodied will be forever missed by everyone he knew.
He never met a stranger and always looked at the positive side of life whenever
it was possible. It was a pleasure to have known him for nearly 40 years and he
will be always fondly remembered. Rest in peace my friend, without any pain
and only joy forever and ever....

Dear Debbie,
Please accept my condolences to you and your children on the passing of your dear Jim. Although we two first cousins did not get to spend much time together in this life, each time we did meet I was very moved by Jim's open-hearted, direct, and generous spirit. Reading these condolences from so many around the world is very lovely, and only confirms my thoughts about him--a very special person. I also remember fondly and vividly the brief time Jim, you, and Grace and I spent together when you visited me in Lancaster PA.
In the last year of his life, as you probably know, Jim and I corresponded periodically,
on a few topics, some funny, some quite deep. Although I had hoped our families would be able to spend more time together in this life, I feel confident he is now entering that blissful abode, and experiencing the wonders of the heavenly realm. Still, it is very hard for loved ones left behind. My sincere prayers are with you.
With love,
Judy

Jim Pines - What a BRIGHT light! By far the most rewarding trip I had as a member of the DoS Safety, Health and Environmental Management team was along the Indonesian archipelago to the Embassy, consulate and East Timor, with Jim as my host. Jim was a genuinely caring person and the consummate professional. My greatest Jim Pines life lesson is to always make the effort to learn people's names, in whatever capacity you meet them, no matter if for just a fleeting moment. To Debbie and Jim's family - our thoughts and prayers are with you - RIP Jim. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Dear Debbie,
Although I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I want you to know that Jim was one of my favorite FMs and I knew and worked with him for years. He was instrumental in promoting the safety program at the posts where he worked and I always loved his common sense, passion, kindness and sense of humor. I don't think I ever met a more down-to-earth, likable guy. When we wanted to name the POSHO Assistant of the Year award after Haydee Martinez, Jim helped pave the way and put me in contact with the right folks to get the approvals.

I'm so sorry for your loss.. The world is not as bright for many of us without Jim in it. I pray that God bring you comfort in your time of loss and that the many happy memories of a life spent with such a wonderful guy softens the pain.

Jim was our next door neighbor in Seoul. We spent a lot of time hanging out at each other's house for holidays and majhong nights. Jim was the best neighbor one can have - he was always there for you when you needed help and advice. He loved his job, colleagues and the community and was truly a genuine friend. He thought my dad how to carve a turkey, showed him the 20 yard tall antenna he build - all done in English that my dad doesn't speak but could understand because of Jim's patience and true passion for people. He showed me photos he took at an orphanage in Wuhan, China and could tell each kid's story and who was adopted by parents from which country. He taught me his secret beef jerky recipe...We wish Jim could be our neighbor at each post... we miss him deeply.

Though our time together in Korea was only a couple years, our friendship will last forever along with the memories we had in school, on vacation in Bali and Thailand, and hanging out at your beautiful home in Seoul (and your nice visit here in our MI home). Jim was such a kind and caring person, and we have enjoyed his witty posts over the years. He will be missed by so many other friends such as ourselves. Our condolences and hugs to each of the Pines family members.

Jim was smart, funny, caring, and kind; he was someone who lived his faith and made a lasting impression on everyone he knew. Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Love to you all....

Saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be.
So He put His arms around you and whispered "come to me."
With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away.
Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

I am Jim's first cousin and although we didn't know one another growing up (we lived in different parts of the country_, Jim and I recently connected on fb and I got to know him (as best as one can on fb) better. His humor, intelligence , wit and positive attitude are traits that really stood out. Although I knew him briefly, he left an indelible mark on my life and heart as it seems he did for many others who have written here. My deepest condolences go out to his family. May you find strength, hope and guidance through your Faith and the love you still hold for Jim and for each other.
